To acquaint you with scholastic journals, texts, and other resources within a specific field or topic of interest. ? To familiarize you with a specific topic in the realm of bias crimes, sociological/ criminological theory, and learn to evaluate its effectiveness when applied to the topic. ? To develop an expression of thought through writing. Topic: You will choose one aspect of bias crimes: this may be one of the protected classes (religion, gender identity, race, etc), a specific hate group (KKK), or you may write about the laws regarding bias crimes. You will also need to choose a theory to make a connection between the chosen topic- (group, protected classes) and the motive for criminal behavior, a motive for joining a hate group, or a theory to explain the law-making. Research paper format: 1. Introduction- This should be a brief overview of the entire paper: what is the topic? Why is this topic a social problem/ what is the need for the law? What theory will be used to discuss the topic? [1 page-15 points] 2. General Discussion of specific topic (protected class, group or laws) [2 pages-25 points] a. Clearly define the behavior, group or laws being researched. b. Prevalence of behavior/group oppression/group membership c. Age, race, sex, etc of the group for which you are writing 3. Detailed discussion of the crime theory- essential principles, assumptions and limitations of the crime theory and how it applies to the bias motivation under consideration [1-2 pages-20] 4. Conclusion – what is the specific group being investigated, where are they, how prevalent, what is the criminological theory and how does it explain the bias behavior directed at the specific group? [ 1 page-15 points] 5. APA Format-you must cite any information that you didn’t already know—if are using exact words—use quotation marks and cite properly. If you are summarizing the idea, you still need to cite it properly. The only thing in your paper not requiring a citation is that which comes from your own brain! ? You must include 4 academic journal articles and 4 alternate sources for a total of 8 resources Requirements: 1.
